Cirque Magazine - editorial director
Quarterly New Orleans Start-up magazine
"...CIRQUE is the idiosyncratic elegance and eccentricity of the city of New Orleans all in a world-class magazine set for the international stage. So, it's only fitting that our content both compliment the Crescent City as well as relay our culture, business, issues, politics, fashion, and most importantly, our people to the world. We portray the city that inspires us with the utmost fun, humor, seriousness and honesty. This approach oozes through our content and is drawn and satirized through our illustrations of the Big Easy and how the city is seen through our minds. Our first issue explores the vibrations of the city through music and cinema along with transitional fashions to ease the omnipresent humidity through the seasons. It takes us back to a simpler way of life, where backyards and patios were used for more than just mosquito zappers. It showcases the artistry in everyday life and creativity that can sometimes come from cupcakes.
We are the magazine that tackles local issues and relates them to our nation. We are the images and illustrations of the city that tourists dream of and locals enjoy everyday. We are the nonsensical and the sensible voice of a city that speaks for itself. We are, CIRQUE..."
Those were the words we wrote as our introductory note for the premiere issue of CIRQUE. CIRQUE Magazine was the efforts of four individuals to bring a new media outlet unlike any other to New Orleans. In a city full of hyper-local news outlets, we sought to create an entertainment variety magazine whose news angle related the issues happening in New Orleans to that of other cities across the country. We aspired to cross-analyze the way in which we New Orleanians handle such concerns vs. how other major cities handle the same types of dealings; all the while bringing the cultural finesse of the Big Easy and introducing it to a new audience. With over 4,000 worldwide subscribers, an investor, and a print deal in tow, Jason Perkins, Lee Huson, Tom Macom and I were all set to launch the magazine in September 2010. Unfortunately, the investor backed out, and Jason, the publisher and business executive, was unable to sell enough print ads to fund the venture before the scheduled print date. This caused Cirque to lose the printing contract for the original negotiated price, forcing us to backlog the Fall launch of our new venture indefinitely. However, the press proof of our premiere issue is available for viewing here (complete with blank ad space pages) as a way for Jason and Lee's strategic vision, Tom's graphic designs and photographs, and my story ideas and editorial direction to be seen for the first time (by clicking the image to the left). Enjoy!
